International Bachelor of Social Sciences

As of September 1, 2005, Roskilde University (RU) offers an English bachelor degree in social sciences, International Bachelor of Social Sciences. In September 2008 RU will follow it up with several master degrees – also in English.

Purpose of International Bachelor of Social Sciences

The purpose of International Bachelor of Social Sciences is to provide students with broad knowledge of social sciences and give them an opportunity to explore and understand social problems. Students also work with subjects such as economics, political science, sociology, and planning, spatiality and resources.

The bachelor degree starts with a two-year basic studies programme as an introduction to each of the disciplines Political Science, Sociology, Economics, and Planning, Spatiality and Resources. During this two-year study programme the students may start focusing on certain subjects of interest within the social sciences and the students may choose freely between various advanced and interdisciplinary courses within each discipline or combinations of disciplines.

The two-year study programme contains four compulsory projects in the form of group work. The project topics are chosen by the groups themselves. This problem-oriented project work makes out 50 % of the two-year study programme. Please note that interdisciplinary studies are considered very important for the study programme.

As a supplement, the two-year study programme also offers courses in philosophy of science, methodology and statistics.

After this two-year study programme the students can complete the third year of their bachelor degree by choosing freely between most of the subjects offered at RU. Among these subjects are:

- business economics

- public administration

- geography

- international development studies

- technological socio-economic planning and

- communication.
