Many issues or problems at the workplace and in society are inherently dynamic and multi-level in nature, with critical features at multiple levels of analysis including the individual, organization, and society. Understanding these multi-level phenomena is important as it provides the conceptual basis and analytical skills set for developing practical strategies or interventions for effective management of issues and problems. Because issues and problems of interest are often complex and multi-faceted, our understanding is likely to be limited in important ways if we confine ourselves to any specific discipline.
In addition, many of today's issues or problems are ill-defined, with novel demands creating uncertainty and the need to be adaptable. Adaptive individuals will react or act proactively in creative ways and make practically intelligent judgments to challenging problem situations.
In this social sciences panel discussion, we are pleased to share with you insights and advice from speakers who have vast experiences working with graduates in various industries across the private and public sectors and a student leader who has personal experiences with the Bachelor of Social Sciences Programme at SMU. The speakers will comment on how a broad-based undergraduate education combining social science disciplines such as Psychology, Sociology and Political Science would give the student a holistic, multi-disciplinary and integrated approach to the study of today's issues and problems.
In addition, they will illustrate how tracks of study across social sciences and other associated disciplines could equip students with both the foundational knowledge and applied skills to prepare them for a variety of careers and emerge as leaders for fields related to public policy, human resources, management and consulting in government and business organizations, both locally and internationally.
